When Do You Need to Sign a PDF Online?
The need to sign a PDF document comes up constantly — at work, at home, and in almost every formal agreement. Rather than printing, signing by hand, and scanning back, an online PDF signing tool lets you handle the entire process in under a minute, on any device.
Contracts and Agreements
Employment contracts, freelance agreements, service contracts, and partnership agreements all arrive as PDFs. Instead of printing and posting, you can sign and return the document electronically in minutes. Electronic signatures on contracts are legally binding under the US ESIGN Act and EU eIDAS Regulation.
NDAs and Confidentiality Agreements
Non-disclosure agreements are among the most sensitive documents you will sign. Uploading an NDA to a cloud-based platform creates an irony: the document protecting your confidential information is now stored on a third-party server. SigPDF processes NDAs entirely in your browser, so the file never leaves your device. Sign NDAs online with SigPDF →
Lease and Rental Agreements
Landlords and property managers increasingly send lease agreements as PDFs. Signing online removes the need for in-person meetings or postal delays. Sign lease agreements online →
Invoices and Financial Documents
Freelancers and consultants often need to sign invoices before submitting them to clients. SigPDF lets you add a signature to any invoice PDF without installing accounting software. Sign invoices online →
Medical, Legal, and Government Forms
Consent forms, medical release forms, insurance documents, tax forms, and government applications frequently require a signature. These documents often contain highly sensitive personal information — processing them in-browser keeps that data off third-party servers. Sign medical forms → · Sign tax forms →
Are Electronically Signed PDFs Legally Valid?
Yes. Electronic signatures have had the same legal standing as handwritten signatures in most countries for over two decades. The key legislation is:
- United States — ESIGN Act (2000): Electronic signatures are legally valid on contracts, agreements, and most documents in all 50 states. Federal law explicitly states that a contract or signature may not be denied legal effect solely because it is in electronic form.
- European Union — eIDAS Regulation (2014): An electronic signature cannot be denied legal effect in the EU solely on the grounds that it is in electronic form. SigPDF produces a Simple Electronic Signature (SES), which is sufficient for the vast majority of commercial and personal documents.
- United Kingdom — Electronic Communications Act (2000): Electronic signatures are admissible in legal proceedings and equivalent to handwritten signatures for most purposes.
- Canada, Australia, India, and most other countries have equivalent legislation recognizing electronic signatures on standard documents.
The primary exceptions where electronic signatures may not be sufficient include wills, deeds, and certain notarized documents — which typically require witnessed or certified signatures regardless of the platform used.
