Step by step
- Open the PDF. Drop the file into the editor at the top of this page, or click the box and pick it. On a phone, tap the box and choose the file.
- Create your signature. Draw it with a mouse, trackpad or finger, or type your name and pick a handwriting font. More on each option: add a signature to a PDF.
- Place it on the line. Click where the signature goes, drag it into position and resize it with the corner handle. If the document needs more than one signature, go to the next page and place it again.
- Add the rest. Use Add Initials, Add Date and Add Text for initials, the date or your printed name. If you have a photo or scan of your signature, place it with Add Photo (PNG, JPEG or WebP). If the PDF has fillable fields, fill them in the Form Fields panel.
- Download. Click Confirm & Download Signed PDF. Downloading needs a plan. If you subscribe at this point, your document and the signatures you placed are kept in your browser during checkout, and the signed copy downloads when you come back.
- Check the result. Open the downloaded file and look at every page you signed before you send it. The signature is now part of the page, so if something is off, sign the original again.

If Something Goes Wrong
The PDF is password-protected
An encrypted PDF can't be signed as it is, and the editor tells you so. Open the file (enter the password if asked), choose Print → “Save as PDF”, and open the saved copy here. Or remove the password in the app that protected it.
A scanned form has no fields to fill
A scan is a picture of the page, so there are no fields to type into. Use Add Text to write on the lines and Add Date for the date, then place your signature.
Filled-in fields look empty in another app
Some viewers don't show values typed into a form in another app. When you fill a form in SigPDF, the values are written into the page itself, so for most forms they look the same in every PDF viewer. The trade-off: those fields can't be edited afterwards.
The recipient wants a certificate or “digital ID” signature
SigPDF makes a simple electronic signature: your signature is written into the page. It does not add a certificate-based digital signature. If that is what you were asked for, ask the sender which kind they need, and see how digital signatures differ from electronic ones.

Are Electronically Signed PDFs Legally Valid?
Yes, for most everyday documents. For over two decades, most countries have had laws that stop a signature from being refused just because it is electronic. The key legislation is:
- United States — ESIGN Act (2000): For transactions in or affecting interstate or foreign commerce, electronic signatures and records can't be denied legal effect solely because they are electronic (15 U.S.C. § 7001). Most states have also adopted the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act (UETA); New York has its own law. Some documents are excluded, such as wills and certain family-law and court documents.
- European Union — eIDAS Regulation (2014): An electronic signature cannot be denied legal effect in the EU solely on the grounds that it is in electronic form (Art. 25(1), Regulation (EU) No 910/2014). SigPDF produces a simple electronic signature (SES), which can be used for most everyday documents. Only a qualified electronic signature formally equals a handwritten one (Art. 25(2)).
- United Kingdom — Electronic Communications Act (2000): Electronic signatures are admissible in evidence, and the Law Commission concluded in 2019 that they can generally be used where the law requires a signature.
- Canada, Australia, India, and most other countries have equivalent legislation recognizing electronic signatures on standard documents.
The primary exceptions where electronic signatures may not be sufficient include wills, deeds, and certain notarized documents — which typically require witnessed or certified signatures regardless of the platform used.
